Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities (American Psychological Association).

Most children who have ASD also demonstrate speech development delay, hyper- or hyposensitivity, sleep problems, narrow food preferences, compulsive-obsessive syndrome, ADHD, etc.

According to statistics, the rate of ASD incidence has been grown over the years. Nowadays, it is reported that in the USA the prevalence of children with ASD is 1 in every 59 children, while 50 years ago, it was 1 in 5000. The reason for this increase is not only because of the factual increase of ASD cases, but also better methods of diagnosis to identify those with ASD.

The official etiology of ASD is unknown, but it is defined as a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Autism is rarely diagnosed until the age of 3, although there being evidence that it can be recognized in the first months of a child’s life.

There is no official comprehensive treatment established that can treat the disorder on its own. Some medications help to cope with some of the symptoms, such as hyperactivity, anxiety, etc. Behavioral therapies may help in some cases with social communication and verbal problems, but none of them aid in treating the condition itself.
